Sir William Codrington, 2nd Baronet (born 1719, died 1792) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like the main part of the British Parliament. He served there for many years, from 1747 to 1792.

William was born on October 26, 1719. He was the oldest son of Sir William Codrington, 1st Baronet and his wife Elizabeth Bethall. His family lived at Dodington Park.

Early Life and Family Connections

William went to school at Westminster School. Later, he studied at University College, Oxford. In 1736, when he was about 16, he married Anne Acton. She was from Fulham, Middlesex.

In 1738, William's father passed away. William then became the 2nd Baronet, taking on the title of Sir William Codrington. He also inherited a lot of land. This included large farms, called plantations, in the West Indies. These plantations were located on islands like Barbuda and at a place called Betty's Hope.

A Career in Politics

Sir William Codrington became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1747. This meant he was chosen to represent people in the House of Commons. His first area was Beverley. He was re-elected for Beverley in 1755.

In 1761, he decided to represent a different area. He became the MP for Tewkesbury. He was very popular there. He was re-elected many times. This happened in 1768, 1774, 1780, 1784, and 1790. Sir William was an MP for a very long time. Records show he only spoke once in Parliament. This was about a bill related to hunting in 1762.

Later Life and Inheritance

Sir William Codrington passed away on March 11, 1792. His son, also named William, was supposed to become the 3rd Baronet. However, Sir William decided not to leave his main properties to his son. Instead, he left his estates to his nephew, Christopher Bethell-Codrington. This is called disinheriting someone.
