William Ewart was born in 1817. His father was also named William Ewart. He went to school at the Belfast Academy. After his education, he became a linen manufacturer. This meant he owned factories that made linen fabric. He was also a merchant, selling the linen he produced.
He became very important in the linen world. He was even the president of the Irish Linen Trade Association. This group helped guide and support the linen industry in Ireland.
A Career in Politics
Sir William Ewart was also active in local government. In 1859, he became the Mayor of Belfast. This was a very important job, leading the city of Belfast. He also served as a magistrate for Antrim and Belfast. A magistrate is a local official who helps keep law and order.
Later, he became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the House of Commons. He first represented the area of Belfast starting in 1878.
In 1885, the areas that MPs represented were changed. After this, Sir William Ewart became the MP for the Northern Division of Belfast. He continued to serve as an MP until he passed away in 1889.

In 1887, Sir William Ewart was given a special honor. He was made a baronet. This is a title that is passed down through families, similar to a knight but hereditary.
He was also involved in business outside of Ireland. He was one of the directors of the XIT Ranch. This was a very large cattle ranch located in Texas, in the United States.
