Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir William Fenwick (born around 1617, died July 9, 1676) was an important English landowner and politician. He was known as the 2nd Baronet of his family. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. Sir William served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament, similar to how laws are made today. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for many years between 1645 and 1676.

Early Life and Education

William Fenwick was the oldest surviving son of Sir John Fenwick, 1st Baronet. His mother was Grace Loraine. The family lived at Wallington Hall in Northumberland, England.

William received a good education for his time. He went to Morpeth Grammar School and then studied at Christ's College, Cambridge, a famous university. After that, he joined Gray's Inn, which was a place where people trained to become lawyers.

William became the 2nd Baronet around 1658, after his father passed away. His older half-brother, John, had sadly died earlier in 1644 during the Marston Moor battle, which was a big fight in the English Civil War.

A Career in Politics

Sir William Fenwick was a dedicated politician. He served as a member of parliament (MP) for the area of Northumberland. An MP is someone chosen by the people to represent them and help make laws in the country's government.

He was an MP during several different periods:

  • From 1645 to 1648
  • In 1654
  • In 1656
  • In 1659
  • In 1660
  • And for a long time from 1661 until his death in 1676

This shows he was a consistent and active part of the English government for many years.

Family Life

Sir William Fenwick married a woman named Jane. She was the daughter of Henry Stapilton from Wighill, Yorkshire.

Together, William and Jane had three children: one son and two daughters. When Sir William passed away in 1676, his son, Sir John Fenwick, 3rd Baronet, took over the family title and estates.
