Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir William Lowther, 2nd Baronet (born around 1694 – died 6 March 1763), was an important landowner from Swillington, England. He held a special title called a baronet, which is passed down through families.

Early Life and Education

William was the oldest son of Sir William Lowther, 1st Baronet, and his mother was Annabella Maynard. He went to schools in Wakefield and Leeds. Later, on February 28, 1713, he started studying at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, as a special kind of student.

Time in Politics

In 1729, when his father passed away, William became the new baronet. He also became a Member of Parliament for the area of Pontefract. This meant he helped make laws for the country in the House of Commons.

However, in 1740, William faced money problems. He had to sell some important properties in Pontefract that gave him a lot of influence in the area. Because of this, he left the House of Commons when the next election happened in 1741.

Family and Legacy

Sir William Lowther was married two times. His first wife was Diana Condon, whom he married in 1719. She passed away on January 1, 1736. Later that same year, on August 17, 1736, he married his second wife, Catherine Ramsden. She was the daughter of Sir William Ramsden, 2nd Baronet. Sadly, Sir William did not have any children with either of his wives.

When he died, he left his home and land in Swillington to his cousin, Rev. William Lowther. This cousin later also became a baronet, and his son was given the title of Earl of Lonsdale in 1807.

Coat of Arms

Sir William Lowther's family coat of arms was: a gold shield with six black rings. These rings were arranged in three rows: three rings at the top, two in the middle, and one at the bottom.
