Type Maritime museum

The Pointe-au-Père Maritime Historic Site is a cool museum in Rimouski, Quebec, Canada. It shows off 200 years of amazing maritime history. This means you can learn all about ships, the ocean, and people who worked on the water.

One of the most exciting things here is Canada's very first submarine that people can visit! It's called HMCS Onondaga. It opened to the public in 2009. Another submarine, HMCS Ojibwa, also opened for visitors in 2013. Both are Oberon class class submarines, which means they are from the same type.

What You Can See at the Museum

The museum has several exciting parts. You can explore a real submarine, learn about a famous shipwreck, and even climb a historic lighthouse!

Exploring a Real Submarine

The HMCS Onondaga is a retired submarine from the Canadian Forces. It was brought to the museum from Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2008. Now, it's a special museum ship. When you visit, you can take an audio-guided tour. This tour helps you imagine what life was like for the sailors who lived and worked inside the submarine. It's a tight squeeze, but super interesting!

The Empress of Ireland Shipwreck

The museum also has a special section about the ocean liner RMS Empress of Ireland. This huge ship sank off the coast in 1914. It was a very sad event. The museum displays items found from the shipwreck. These artifacts help tell the story of the ship and its passengers.

Visiting the Historic Lighthouse

At the site, you can also explore the Pointe-au-Père navigational aid station [fr]. This area includes the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse. You can take guided tours of the lighthouse itself. You can also see the house where the lighthouse keeper lived. There's even a shed for the foghorn and other buildings that were part of the light station. It's a great way to learn how lighthouses helped guide ships safely.

Museum Connections

The Pointe-au-Père Maritime Historic Site works with other important groups. These include the CMA, the CHIN, and the Virtual Museum of Canada. These connections help the museum share its stories and history with even more people.
