The Siuslaw are a Native American people who traditionally lived along the southwest Oregon Pacific coast in the United States. They are closely related to the Lower Umpqua people, also known as the Kuitsh. Today, the Siuslaw are part of larger groups of Native American tribes.
Some Siuslaw people are part of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. Others, who live off the reservation, are part of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians. These confederations are like alliances where different tribes work together.

Who Are the Siuslaw People?
The Siuslaw people have a long history connected to the beautiful coast of Oregon. They lived near rivers and the ocean, which provided them with many resources. Their traditional lands were in what is now southwest Oregon.
Life on the Oregon Coast
The Siuslaw, like many coastal tribes, were skilled at fishing, hunting, and gathering. They used the natural resources around them for food, shelter, and tools. The ocean and rivers were very important to their way of life.
What are Confederated Tribes?
A "confederated tribe" means that several different Native American tribes have joined together. They share a government and work together on important issues. This helps them protect their culture, land, and rights. The Siuslaw are part of two such groups today.
The Siuslaw Language
The Siuslaw people and the Lower Umpqua (Kuitsh) people spoke very similar languages. These were different forms, or dialects, of the Siuslaw language. The Kuitsh dialect and the Siuslaw dialect were both part of a larger group called Coast Oregon Penutian languages.
What Happened to the Language?
Sadly, the original Siuslaw language is now considered extinct. This means that there are no longer any native speakers of the language. When a language becomes extinct, a lot of cultural knowledge and history can be lost. However, efforts are sometimes made to revive or remember these languages.
