sjDANCEco is a contemporary dance company located in San Jose, California. It was started in 2003 by Gary Masters, Maria Basile, and Melanie Doerner. They focus on modern dance styles. The company often practices and performs at San Jose State University.
About sjDANCEco
sjDANCEco grew from an earlier dance group called the Limón West Dance Project. Gary Masters led this group from 1994 to 1998. Some dancers from that group, like Maria Basile and Hsiang Hsiu Lin, later joined sjDANCEco.
What They Do
In its first ten years, sjDANCEco created many new dance pieces. They presented 42 World Premieres, which are dances performed for the very first time. They also brought back six Revivals, which are older dances performed again.
The company has worked with famous choreographers like Donald McKayle and Fred Mathews. For five years, sjDANCEco also worked with the José Limón Dance Foundation. During this time, they performed eight dances by the famous choreographer José Limón.
sjDANCEco also helps new dance artists. They hold two annual ChoreoProject Awards. These awards showcase new dances by professional San Francisco Bay Area choreographers. They also celebrate National Dance Week with their "FESTIVAL @ SANTANA ROW".
Helping the Community
sjDANCEco is a non-profit organization. This means they do not make money for themselves. Instead, they use their funds to support their mission. They help people in the San Francisco South Bay area. They also support local dance artists.
Their goal is to introduce new people to dance. They want to help everyone learn to love and appreciate this art form.
Selected Performances
sjDANCEco has performed many different dances. Here are a few examples:
- Tango Fatal (2013)
