The Skaneateles Historic District is a special area in the village of Skaneateles, New York. It covers about 17 acres and is like a time capsule. Many of its buildings date back to 1796. Most of the buildings are from the 1800s. They include old homes and shops.
This district has 59 buildings that are important to its history. It also includes Thayer Park, a special site along Skaneateles Lake. These places help tell the story of the village. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it is recognized as a significant historical place.

Discovering Skaneateles' Historic Heart
The Skaneateles Historic District is located along East Genesee Street. This street is also known as New York Route 20. The district stretches from Jordan Street to Onondaga Street. It also includes properties on Jordan Street and a stone mill on Fennell Street. This area is the very center of Skaneateles' old downtown.
Rebuilding After a Big Fire
In 1835, a big fire almost completely destroyed the downtown area of Skaneateles. But the people of Skaneateles didn't give up! They worked hard to rebuild their village. By 1836, the downtown area was mostly new again. The buildings you see today show how the village was rebuilt and grew.
Famous Architects and Styles
Many different building styles can be seen in the district. These include Greek Revival, Federal, Italianate, and Romanesque Revival. These styles make the district look unique and interesting.
Some famous architects designed buildings here. Stanford White designed "The Boulders" at 100 East Genesee Street in 1881. Horatio Nelson White designed St. James' Episcopal Church in 1873. It is located at 94 East Genesee Street. The district is known for its beautiful, tree-lined streets and well-preserved buildings.
