Skerray Bay facts for kids

Skerray Bay is a beautiful part of the Atlantic Ocean. It is located on the northern coast of Sutherland, in the Highland region of Scotland. This bay is small and rocky. You can find it north of a place called Clashbuie and northwest of the small farming community of Skerray.
At the entrance to the bay, there is a large rock named Càrn Mòr. A narrow water channel, called Caol Beag, separates Coomb Island from the mainland. Skerray Bay is also a special area for geology, meaning it's important for studying rocks and the Earth's history. Many walkers enjoy the 8-mile trek from Skerray Bay to Tongue.
History of Skerray Bay
Building the Pier
In October 1894, a very important person named the Duke of Sutherland started the building of Port Skerray. He laid the first stone for this new port. The Skerray Pier, which is a platform built out over the water, was finished in 1896. It was built right on the rocky edge of the bay.
Later, in 1901, another entrance was made for the harbour. Workers cut through a reef of rocks on the east side of the bay to create this new way in. This made it easier for boats to use the harbour.
