Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Skerry is a small community, also called a hamlet, located in Franklin County, New York, United States. You can find it in the town of Brandon. It sits east of the Little Salmon River. Main roads like Skerry Road and Bangor Skerry Road pass through it.

Skerry is about 9 miles southwest of Malone. It is also about 5 miles southeast of West Bangor.

This community first grew because of a lumber mill and other small shops. To the north of Skerry, you'll see many farms. To the south, there are the lower parts of the Adirondack Mountains. You'll also find large forests there, which are part of the Deer River State Forests.

Skerry's History

Skerry began to grow in the mid to late 1800s. It was a small community that helped the farms nearby. It also had several small businesses.

One important business was the Bowen Sawmill. This mill worked for over thirty years. It was a big part of Skerry's early days. The mill even had its own logging camps. These camps helped get the wood needed for the sawmill. Many people worked there, both at the mill and in the forests.

In 1920, a company called Reynolds Bros. bought the lumber mill. They ran it for six years. But in 1926, a dam washed out, and the mill had to close.
