Skilandis is a tasty Lithuanian sausage.

Skilandis, also known as Kindziukas, is a special kind of sausage from Lithuania. It's made from meat, fat, salt, pepper, and garlic. This sausage is "matured," which means it's aged to develop its flavor.

Traditionally, the ground meat mixture is pressed into a pig's stomach or bladder. But today, other types of casings can be used. After being shaped, the sausage is dried and then "cold-smoked." Cold-smoking means it's smoked at a low temperature, which helps preserve it and gives it a unique smoky taste.

Skilandis has a long history! People have been making it since at least the 16th century. The word skilandis appears in old documents from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania between the 16th and 18th centuries.

What is Lietuviškas Skilandis?

The name Lietuviškas skilandis is very important. It's protected as a "Traditional Speciality Guaranteed" (TSG) food. This means it's a special food that has a traditional recipe and is made in a specific way. It helps make sure the quality and tradition of the sausage are kept safe.

At first, people wanted to protect just the name Skilandis. But after some discussions in Lithuania, the name was changed to Lietuviškas skilandis. This change helps show that it's a unique Lithuanian product.
