A Look Back: Park's History
Before it became a park, this land had a different purpose. The 247-acre area was bought by Somerset County in 2011. It used to be the site of a place called Skillman Village. When the county decided to turn the area into a park, they made sure to keep some of its original charm. A landscape architect named Charles Leavitt designed the area in 1901. Much of his original tree-lined layout was saved. However, old buildings that were no longer needed were removed to make space for the new park features.
What to Do at Skillman Park
Skillman Park offers many ways to explore and have fun. You can drive through the park, and there are several parking lots available. One of the main attractions is a paved, multi-use trail that is 2.25 miles long. This trail is perfect for walking, running, or biking. For those who love nature, there is also a special nature path. This path runs along Rock Brook, offering beautiful views and a chance to see local wildlife.
