What's the Ride Like?
When you get on Skull Mountain, your train goes up a lift hill. Then it moves around the front of the building and goes up a second lift hill! The first drop is the biggest and steepest part of the ride. After that, you'll zoom through three turns that spin you around.
Inside the dark building, bright strobe lights flash! You'll also hear cool sound effects and music playing. Sometimes, the park turns on the inside lights. This lets you see everything around you!
On hot summer days, a waterfall flows from the eyes of the giant skull outside. This water splashes down into the area below. It can even get people waiting in line a little wet!
Most roller coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure close if it rains a lot. But Skull Mountain stays open during light rain and even thunderstorms. This is because it's completely inside a building. It only closes if the storm is very bad.
Height Rules for Riders
Skull Mountain opened in 1996. It is one of three roller coasters at the park that needs riders to be at least 44-inch (1,100 mm) tall. If you are this height, an adult must ride with you. To ride by yourself, you need to be at least 48-inch (1,200 mm) tall. The highest point of the ride is 41.5 feet (12.6 m).
Special Events and Themes
Sometimes, Skull Mountain gets a fun makeover for special events at the park!
Fright Fest Fun
During the park's Fright Fest event, Skull Mountain gets a few spooky additions. You might see some pumpkin figures around the ride. Also, the regular lights inside are turned off to make it even darker and scarier!
Holiday in the Park Changes
For the first three years of "Holiday in the Park," which is Six Flags Great Adventure's holiday event, Skull Mountain got a new name! It was temporarily called "Poinsettia Peak." The ride even got a new sign. The outside of the building was decorated with bright red string lights.
In 2018, the ride didn't get this special holiday theme. However, the area around the ride was still called "Poinsettia Peak." The only holiday decorations left that year were a few red lights shining on the attraction.
