What Happens in the Story?
SkyClan's New Members
Six months have passed since Firestar helped SkyClan become a strong group again. The Clan has grown, welcoming cats who used to live alone or with humans.
Some house cats, called "daylight warriors," help SkyClan during the day. They hunt and patrol with the Clan. But at night, they return to their human homes. Leafstar, SkyClan's leader, invited them to help the Clan grow.
However, not all Clan cats are happy about this. Some, like Sharpclaw, call them "kitty warriors." They feel these cats are not fully loyal because they leave the Clan every night. Leafstar tries to keep peace, but some warriors still make fun of the daylight warriors. The daylight warriors include Billystorm, Ebonyclaw, and Harveymoon.
A Mysterious Dream
One day, Leafstar has a strange dream. In her dream, she sees Spottedleaf, an old medicine cat from ThunderClan. Spottedleaf tells her, "This is the leaf-bare of my Clan. Greenleaf will come, but it will bring even greater storms than these. SkyClan will need deeper roots if it is to survive."
The next day, Leafstar talks to her own medicine cat, Echosong. They discover that Echosong had the exact same dream! This makes them wonder what challenges SkyClan will face next. Meanwhile, Leafstar starts to have special feelings for Billystorm, one of the daylight warriors.
The Four Strangers
Later, four new cats arrive at the gorge: Stick, Cora, Coal, and Shorty. These are cats Firestar met on his journey to help SkyClan.
They stay with the Clan and learn how to fight and hunt like Clan cats. In return, Stick teaches SkyClan how to get rid of a large group of rats living in a nearby dump. After the Clan defeats the rats, the four loners start leading patrols. This makes some of the regular warriors, especially Sharpclaw, upset. They feel it's unfair that loners lead patrols when daylight warriors, who have been around longer, are not allowed to.
A Difficult Battle
One day, Leafstar secretly follows some SkyClan cats who are visiting a nearby town. She learns that the four loners came to SkyClan to get help. They want to defeat a group of cats who are stealing prey in their town.
Leafstar agrees to help, but she makes one rule: SkyClan will not kill any cats in the fight. The battle is fierce, and SkyClan wins. However, during the fight, Stick's daughter, Red, is killed while protecting her mate. Stick becomes very angry, especially when Leafstar stops her warriors from killing the other cats. He disagrees with Leafstar's rule.
New Rules for SkyClan
After returning to the gorge, Leafstar decides to set up clear rules for any visiting cats. She wants to prevent future problems.
Her new rules state that visiting cats must help hunt every day. Also, SkyClan will not teach any fighting moves until a visitor has spent a full month with the Clan. Leafstar declares that SkyClan is "a proud, independent Clan with a code and honor of our own." This helps SkyClan figure out its own destiny without relying on other Clans or their warrior ancestors.
