Sky Witness was an important ruler of an ancient Maya city called Calakmul. This city was also known as Kaan and was a major cultural center for the Maya people.

He became the ruler of Kaan sometime before the year 561. Sky Witness led his city into a big war against a rival Maya city-state, Tikal. Tikal was also known as Mutal.

In 562, Sky Witness led Kaan to a major victory over Tikal. This win was very important because it greatly reduced Tikal's power. Before this, Tikal had a lot of control in the southern Yucatán Peninsula. Sky Witness's victory broke that power for several decades. This made Calakmul even stronger and more influential in the Maya world.
