The Slangkop Lighthouse is a tall, white tower that helps ships find their way. It stands near a small town called Kommetjie, which is close to Cape Town in South Africa. Lighthouses like this one are super important for keeping sailors safe at sea.
A Look Back in Time
This lighthouse was planned a long time ago. It was supposed to be built by 1914. There was even a special brass sign ready for its opening! But then, World War I started. This big war caused delays, and building the lighthouse had to wait.
The lighthouse was finally finished in 1918. Even though it officially opened later, it was already helping ships. A ship called HMS Himalaya wrote in its logbook that the lighthouse was working on July 19, 1917. The Slangkop Lighthouse officially opened its doors on March 4, 1919.
About the Lighthouse
The Slangkop Lighthouse is a beautiful white tower. It is made from strong iron. The tower is round and stands very tall. From the ground to the top, it measures about 33 meters (that's about 108 feet!). It has a balcony and a lantern room at the very top. This is where the powerful light shines out over the ocean.
