Slosarczykovia is a special type of squid. It's known as a monotypic genus, which means it's the only species in its group, or genus. Its full scientific name is Slosarczykovia circumantarctica. This unique squid belongs to the family called Brachioteuthidae.

What Does This Squid Look Like?
Slosarczykovia circumantarctica is a fairly large squid. It can grow up to 170 millimeters (about 6.7 inches) long, measured from the tip of its head to the end of its body. This main body part, called the mantle, is long and thin. At the back of its body, it has fins shaped like diamonds.
Its Arms and Tentacles
Like other squids, Slosarczykovia circumantarctica has arms and tentacles. The suckers on its arms are quite interesting because they are all different! Some suckers have no teeth at all, while others have a few teeth, and some have many.
The tentacles are longer than the arms and are used for catching prey. The biggest suckers are found on the parts of the tentacles closest to the squid's body. These large suckers are about three-quarters the size of the biggest suckers found further down the tentacles.
Its Skin
When these squids grow larger than 60 millimeters (about 2.4 inches), their mantle, fins, head, and arms get a special covering. This covering is made of a fibrous, net-like material that covers their skin, or integument.
Where Does This Squid Live?
Slosarczykovia circumantarctica was first discovered near Wilkes Land in Antarctica. Scientists believe it lives all around the cold seas surrounding Antarctica. It's actually one of the most common types of squid found in these icy waters!
Its Lifestyle
Even though it's common, we still don't know much about the daily life of this squid. It lives in the open ocean, far from the seafloor, which means it's a pelagic species. People don't usually fish for this type of squid.
How Did It Get Its Name?
The name Slosarczykovia was chosen to honor a scientist named Dr. Wieslaw Slósarczyk. He was very important because he collected almost all the squid specimens that helped scientists describe this new species.
The second part of its name, circumantarctica, tells us where it lives. "Circum" means "around," so "circumantarctica" means "around Antarctica." This refers to how the squid is found all around the Southern Ocean near Antarctica.
