7-Eleven, Inc. is a popular chain of convenience stores. It started in the United States but is now owned by a Japanese company called Seven & I Holdings through Seven-Eleven Japan Co., Ltd.. The company's main office is in Irving, Texas.

7-Eleven began in 1927 as a small shop that sold ice in Dallas. Over the years, it grew and changed its name several times. Today, 7-Eleven runs, franchises, and licenses over 84,500 stores in 19 different countries and regions. In the United States, you might also see stores like Speedway and Stripes Convenience Stores that are part of the 7-Eleven family.

What's in a Name?

The first stores in Dallas were called "Tote'm Stores." This name came from how customers would "tote" (carry) their purchases away. Some stores even had cool totem poles outside!

In 1946, the company changed its name to "7-Eleven." This new name showed off their longer hours: 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven days a week. This was a big deal back then! Later, in 1999, the US company's name officially became "7-Eleven Inc."

Have you ever noticed the small 'n' in the 7-Eleven logo? Since 1968, the 'n' has been lowercase. The wife of the company's president in the 1960s thought the all-capital letters looked too strong. She suggested the change to make the logo look "more graceful."

How 7-Eleven Started and Grew

7-eleven logo

In 1927, a worker named John Jefferson Green started selling eggs, milk, and bread from an ice house in Dallas. He got permission from Joe C. Thompson Sr., one of the company's founders. Thompson believed that selling basic items like bread and milk in small, easy-to-reach stores would help customers. He later bought the Southland Ice Company and turned it into the Southland Corporation.

In 1928, a store manager brought a totem pole from Alaska. It became a great way to get people's attention! Soon, all the stores had totem poles and were called "Tote'm Stores." The company also started adding filling stations to some locations. Joe Thompson made sure all stores offered the same good quality and service.

The Great Depression in 1931 made things tough for the company, almost leading to bankruptcy. But they worked hard to get back on track.

In 1946, to help the company grow after World War II, the name changed to 7-Eleven. This was because stores were open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. In 1963, a store in Austin, Texas, stayed open all night to meet customer needs. This led to 7-Eleven trying out a 24-hour schedule in more cities.

7-Eleven started its franchise business in 1963. This meant other people could open their own 7-Eleven stores using the company's name and ideas.

In the late 1980s, the company faced financial challenges. In 1990, a Japanese company called Ito-Yokado took control of 70% of the company. This helped 7-Eleven get back on its feet. In 1999, the Southland Corporation officially changed its name to 7-Eleven, Inc. By 2005, 7-Eleven, Inc. became a fully owned part of Seven-Eleven Japan.

7-Eleven has continued to grow. In 2010, the first "green" 7-Eleven store opened in DeLand, Florida. It uses Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) elements to save energy. That same year, 7-Eleven launched a mobile app for its famous Slurpee drink. By 2013, the company had opened its 60,000th store worldwide!

In 2020, 7-Eleven bought Speedway, another big convenience store chain. In 2021, they launched a large advertising campaign to show that 7-Eleven offers "real restaurant quality food."
