History of Smartsburg
Smartsburg once had its own post office. This post office opened in 1886. People living there could send and receive mail. However, the post office closed down in 1899. It was open for about 13 years.
No one is completely sure how Smartsburg got its name. Some people think it was named after a plant. This plant is called smartweed and it grew a lot in the area. Other people believe the community was named after a local family. This family had the last name Smart.
