Smilax walteri, often called the coral greenbrier or red-berried greenbrier, is a cool plant that grows only in the United States. You can find it naturally in the flat, coastal areas of the country's south-central, southeastern, and east-central parts. Its range stretches all the way from eastern Texas to New Jersey.

What is Smilax Walteri?

Smilax walteri is a type of plant known as a vine. This means it likes to climb! It often grows over other plants, using them for support. Sometimes, it can reach as high as 6 meters (about 20 feet) off the ground. That's like climbing to the top of a two-story building!

Appearance and Features

The flowers of Smilax walteri are quite small. They are usually yellow-brown, so they don't really stand out much. However, this plant has a secret weapon for getting noticed: its berries!

Bright Berries

The berries of the coral greenbrier are a bright red or orange color. They are very easy to see, especially during the winter months. When many other plants have lost their leaves, these colorful berries really pop! They add a splash of color to the winter landscape.

Why is it Called Red-Berried Bamboo?

One of the common names for Smilax walteri is "red-berried bamboo." This name can be a bit confusing! Even though it's called bamboo, this plant is actually not related to real bamboo at all. It's just a nickname that people use.
