Discovering Smith, Kentucky
Smith is a quiet community in the beautiful mountains of Kentucky. It's a place where people live and work, even without a formal city government. The area is known for its natural beauty and the important lake nearby.
Martin's Fork Lake: A Big Help
A very important part of Smith is Martins Fork Lake. The US Army Corps of Engineers built this lake. They created it to help control floods along the Cumberland River. The dam that holds back the water was finished in November 1978. This lake helps protect homes and land from too much water.
A Look at Smith's Past
Smith has changed over the years. Until the early 1970s, children in the community went to Smith Elementary School. However, when plans were made to build Martin's Fork Lake, the school had to close. Students then started going to Cawood Elementary, a school nearby. The community's post office also closed in the early 1990s.
Community Life Today
Even with some changes, Smith remains a community. Today, it is served by four churches. These churches are Pace Chapel, New Riverside Baptist Church, Full-Gospel Pentecostal Church, and Faith-Holiness Church. They help bring people together in the area.
