Smithgall Woods Conservation Area and Lodge is a special place in Georgia. It's a huge protected area, about 5,664 acres big, which is like having many football fields put together! This area is a state park and a lodge near Helen, Georgia.

It's a beautiful wilderness with very old forests. You can find 12 miles of streams filled with trout. Many wild animals live here too, like turkeys, bears, and deer. It's a great spot to explore nature and see wildlife up close.

The Story Behind Smithgall Woods

This amazing area is named after a kind man called Charles A. Smithgall Jr.. He was a publisher and broadcaster in Georgia. He was also a philanthropist, which means he was a person who gives money and time to help others and good causes.

Mr. Smithgall bought all this land in the 1970s. He and his team worked hard to clean it up. They removed trash, put fish back into the streams, and planted thousands of trees. In 1994, he sold the land to the state of Georgia for half its real value. He wanted to make sure it would be protected for everyone to enjoy. He once said, "At some point, a man has to put something back." He believed in giving back to nature.

You might see wild turkeys walking through the woods. Black bears also live here, so it's important to know how to be safe around them. Deer are common and can often be seen grazing. The streams are full of trout, making it a great place for fishing (with the right permits, of course!). This area helps protect these animals and their homes for the future.
