Smithville is a small place in Monroe County, Indiana, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Clear Creek Township.
Smithville's Story: A Look Back
Smithville began its journey in 1851. It was founded when a new railroad line, the New Albany Railroad, was built through the area. The arrival of the railroad helped the community grow.
The community was named after one of its first important people, George Smith. He was one of the people who helped start the settlement. A post office has been open in Smithville since 1854, helping people send and receive mail for a very long time.
