Island's Traditional Owners

Snapper Island is a special place for the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people. It is part of their traditional sea country. The Kuku Yalanji people have hunted and fished around the island for a long time. They also help to look after the island's culture and traditions.

A Look at Snapper Island's Past

In the early 1900s, a man named Jerry Doyle worked on the island. He had a lime kiln there. A lime kiln is a special oven used to make lime. He used wood from the Daintree River to fuel his kiln. The wood was brought over on a boat called the "Nellie."

People might have also processed Beche-de-mer (sea cucumbers) on the island. This means they would boil them there. You can still see signs of an old Chinese market garden on the island. The stone work from its water system is still visible today.

The explorer George Elphinstone Dalrymple stopped at this island. He visited Snapper Island before he discovered the Daintree River.

Plants and Animals of the Island

Snapper Island has many different types of plants. You can find small areas of mangrove trees. There are also dense forests with tough, dry-climate plants. Other parts have thick vine forests. You can also see plants that grow along the coast.

Many sea creatures and birds live on the island. One special bird is the pied imperial-pigeon. These pigeons visit Snapper Island during the summer months.
