Snow's Island is a swampy area in Florence County, South Carolina. It is located along the Pee Dee River. This place is famous because it was a secret hideout during the American Revolutionary War. A brave leader named Francis Marion used it as his headquarters. He was known as the "Swamp Fox."

Francis Marion was a South Carolina officer. He led a group of fighters who used clever "guerrilla" tactics. This means they would make surprise attacks and then quickly disappear. These tactics helped the American side a lot against the British. Snow's Island was made a special National Historic Landmark in 1974.

What is Snow's Island Like Today?

Snow's Island is a remote and swampy area. It is in Florence County, South Carolina. The land is private and not open to visitors. You might be able to see parts of it from Dunham Bluff Road. This road is near U.S. Route 378.

The land has changed a lot over time. Logging activities have even moved the river's path. Because of this, there are no clear signs left from the Revolutionary War. In 1780, Snow's Island was a plantation. Its exact borders are not known today. The area has been used for logging and as a private hunting spot many times.

Francis Marion's Secret Base

Snow's Island was very important in history. General Francis Marion and his fighters stayed there for about four months. This was from December 1780 to March 1781. From this hidden base, Marion planned his surprise attacks. He targeted British forces and their outposts.

British soldiers tried hard to find Marion's camp. They finally found and destroyed it in March 1781. Luckily, Marion and most of his men were not there at the time. Today, the only possible sign of Marion's time there is an earthen shape. It might have been part of a military defense.
