The Story of Snyder's Pretzels
How It All Began
The story of Snyder's of Hanover started a long time ago in 1909. A person named Harry Warehime opened a bakery in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Later, in 1920, Eda and Edward Snyder began selling their own homemade potato chips. They sold these chips to different stores.
Becoming Two Companies
In 1950, the company split into two separate businesses. One was Snyder's of Hanover, and the other was called Snyder of Berlin. Snyder's of Hanover was then bought by another company called Hanover Canning Company. This company is now known as Hanover Foods.
Becoming Independent Again
Snyder's of Hanover became its own independent company again in 1981. It is important to know that Snyder's of Hanover is no longer connected to Snyder of Berlin. This is even mentioned on their snack packages!
Growing Bigger with Other Snack Brands
Snyder's of Hanover has grown by joining with other snack companies.
- In 2007, they bought Jays Foods, a snack company from Chicago, Illinois. This helped them continue making and selling Jays' snacks in the middle of the United States.
- In 2010, Snyder's of Hanover planned to join with another snack company called Utz Quality Foods. However, the U.S. government agency, the Federal Trade Commission, stopped this plan.
- Later in 2010, Snyder's of Hanover announced they would merge with Lance Inc.. This created a huge snack food company called Snyder's-Lance. This new company was based in Charlotte, NC.
- In 2017, a very big food company, Campbell Soup, bought Snyder's-Lance for a lot of money.
- Interestingly, the Utz Foods company later joined with the other Snyder company, Snyder of Berlin, in 2019.
