Joining Forces: The Snyder's-Lance Merger
On July 22, 2010, Lance announced some big news. They shared that they would join together with another snack company called Snyder's of Hanover. This kind of joining is called a merger.
The new company was named Snyder's-Lance Inc. It continued to be a public company, meaning its shares could be bought and sold. The main office stayed in Charlotte. On December 2, Lance shareholders, who are people who own parts of the company, agreed to the deal. This merger created the second largest snack food company in the country!
What are "Nabs"?
You might have heard people call some snack crackers "nabs." This is a common nickname for these snacks. The name "nabs" actually came from a different company, Nabisco.
In 1924, the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) started selling a new snack. It was a "Peanut Sandwich Packet" that cost five cents. They later added a "Sorbetto Sandwich Packet." These small, sealed packets made it easy for salespeople to sell snacks in many places. They sold them at soda fountains, roadside stands, and newsstands. Sales grew quickly! In 1928, the company started using the shorter name "NAB" for these snacks. People really liked the new name, and it became very popular.
