Chandlers were people who worked with both soap and candles. This made sense because making soap and making candles used many of the same tools and ingredients, like fats and oils.

Soapers Today

Today, most soap is made in large factories. However, many people still enjoy making soap by hand. This is often called "craft-scale" soap making. Some people do it as a fun hobby, while others want to keep traditional soap-making methods alive.

Many consumers prefer handmade soap because it can be different from mass-produced soaps. It can also be a way to support more sustainable (earth-friendly) ways of living.

The job of a soaper was so important that it even led to some common family names! If your last name is "Soper" or "Soaper," it might mean your ancestors were soap makers. In some parts of the world, like Arabic-speaking countries, the name "Saboni" also means "soap maker."
