What Makes Social Spiders Special?
Most spiders you know live by themselves. They hunt alone and build their own webs. Social spiders are different. They work together to build huge webs. They also hunt together and share their food. This teamwork helps them survive better.
How Are They Different from Other Group Animals?
You might have heard of ants or bees living in groups. They have a "caste system." This means different members have different jobs, like a queen bee or worker ants. Social spiders do not have this system. All the spiders in the group are pretty much equal. They all help with hunting and building. Because of this, they are not called "eusocial." This is a special word for animals with a strict caste system.
Where Do Social Spiders Live?
Social spiders are mostly found in tropical areas. These are places with warm weather all year round. They live in different habitats within these regions. Scientists have found at least 23 different kinds of social spiders. They belong to eight different spider families. This means that living in groups has developed many times in different spider types.
Who Discovered Social Spiders?
The first social spider was found over 100 years ago. A French naturalist named Eugène Simon discovered it. He was born on April 30, 1848, and passed away on November 17, 1924. Eugène Simon was very famous for studying spiders. He described more than 4,000 different kinds of spiders during his life!
