Socoroma is a small village located in the Arica and Parinacota Region of Chile. It is found off Ruta 11 at the 99-kilometer mark. This village is an old settlement of the Aymara people, an indigenous group from the Andes mountains.
Over the years, people have worked hard to keep Socoroma from becoming empty. They have invested a lot to make sure the village stays alive and vibrant. Socoroma has a beautiful, well-kept church and a central plaza, which is like a town square.
Village Life and Buildings
The traditional houses in Socoroma used to have roofs made from grass and leather. Today, most of these roofs have been updated and are now covered with corrugated iron. This change helps protect the homes better from the weather.
The village's church, the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís de Socoroma, received a big renovation in 2012. During this work, a new roof was built using a special wood structure. This structure was made strong by tightening it with leather, just like in old traditions.
Special Oregano from Socoroma
One of the important farm products grown in Socoroma is Oregano. This herb is used in cooking all over the world. The oregano from Socoroma is quite special and different from oregano grown in other places.
The plants grow at a high altitude, about 3,000 meters (around 9,800 feet) above sea level. To protect themselves from the harsh conditions at this height, the oregano plants produce extra natural ingredients. These special ingredients give Socoroma's oregano a unique flavor and aroma. There is even a local cooperative called "Oro Verde" that helps farmers grow and sell this special oregano.
