Soehrensia huascha is a type of cactus that belongs to the Soehrensia group. You can find this plant growing in the northwestern parts of Argentina. Scientists officially described this cactus in 2013. For a while, people thought it was part of a different cactus group called Echinopsis.

About the Soehrensia Huascha Cactus

This cactus usually grows in groups, branching out from its base. It forms low clumps that can reach up to 1 meter (about 3 feet) tall.

Stems and Spines

The stems of Soehrensia huascha are shaped like cylinders. They are a fresh green color and can grow straight up or creep along the ground. Each stem has a tip that points upwards.

The stems have between 14 and 17 ribs, which are like ridges running down the plant. They are about 5 centimeters (2 inches) wide. Small, round spots called areoles grow on these ribs. From these areoles, yellowish to brownish, needle-like thorns stick out. Each areole can be up to 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) across.

The cactus has two kinds of spines:

  • Central Spines: There are 1 to 3 central spines. They are a bit thicker than the other spines. These can be between 2 and 7 centimeters (0.8 to 2.8 inches) long.
  • Radial Spines: Around the central spines, there are 9 to 11 radial spines. These are shorter, growing up to 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) long.

Flowers and Fruits

The flowers of Soehrensia huascha grow near the top of the cactus. They can be different shapes, from funnel-shaped (like a cone) to bell-shaped. These flowers open during the day. They can be up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) long and 7 centimeters (2.8 inches) wide.

The base of the flower, called the flower cup, is olive green and about 4.5 centimeters (1.8 inches) long. It is covered with tiny brownish to black hairs, which are about 4 to 6 millimeters (0.16 to 0.24 inches) long.

After the flowers, the cactus produces fruits. These fruits are round or egg-shaped. They can be yellowish-green or reddish in color. Each fruit grows to about 3 centimeters (1.2 inches) across.

Types of Soehrensia Huascha

Scientists have identified two main types, or subspecies, of Soehrensia huascha:

  • Soehrensia huascha subsp. huascha
  • Soehrensia huascha subsp. robusta (Rausch) Schlumpb.
