Sofia's Early Life and Work

Sofia Ribeiro studied mathematics at the University of the Azores. She finished her degree in 2000. Later, in 2008, she earned another degree in school administration.

Since 2000, Sofia has worked as a math teacher in the Azores. She also became very active in the teachers' union. A union is a group that helps workers. From 2005, she focused all her time on helping the union. She led the teachers' union of the Azores from 2010 to 2014. During this time, she was also a leader in a bigger union group called UGT for the Azores.

Becoming a Member of the European Parliament

In 2014, Sofia Ribeiro was chosen to run for the European Parliament. The European Parliament is where elected people from different European countries work together. They make decisions that affect all countries in the European Union.

Sofia was placed third on the list for her party, the Social Democratic Party. This made it very likely she would be elected. The group she was part of, called Portugal Alliance, won enough votes to send seven people to the Parliament. Sofia Ribeiro became a representative for the Azores region in the European Parliament. It was a big surprise to many that someone from the Azores got such a good spot on the election list.
