Becoming a Member of the European Parliament
In 2014, Sofia Ribeiro was chosen to run for the European Parliament. The European Parliament is where elected people from different European countries work together. They make decisions that affect all countries in the European Union.
Sofia was placed third on the list for her party, the Social Democratic Party. This made it very likely she would be elected. The group she was part of, called Portugal Alliance, won enough votes to send seven people to the Parliament. Sofia Ribeiro became a representative for the Azores region in the European Parliament. It was a big surprise to many that someone from the Azores got such a good spot on the election list.
