Sol Yaged was an American jazz clarinet player. He was born on December 8, 1922, and passed away on May 11, 2019. Sol was greatly inspired by another famous jazz musician, Benny Goodman.
Early Life and Musical Start
Sol Yaged was born in Brooklyn, New York. He started playing the clarinet when he was 12 years old. This was after he heard Benny Goodman's music on the radio in 1935.
Sol took lessons from a clarinet player who worked with the New York Philharmonic. This is a very famous orchestra. Even though he could have played classical music, Sol chose to play jazz. He loved playing in jazz clubs in New York City, like Jimmy Ryan's and the Swing Club.
Music Career and Collaborations
Sol Yaged served in the Army for three years during World War II. After the war, he played the clarinet professionally for over 70 years! He played with many well-known musicians. Some of these included Phil Napoleon, Coleman Hawkins, Red Allen, and Jack Teagarden.
Starting in the 1960s, Sol often led his own music groups in New York City. In the 1990s, he played in Felix Endico's swing band. Sol also helped with the 1956 movie The Benny Goodman Story. He made sure the musical style in the film was just like Benny Goodman's.
From 1996 to 1997, Sol played music under the direction of bandleader Jack Vartan. They performed at the Stony Hill Inn in Bergen County, New Jersey.
Family Life
Sol Yaged was married to Zelda. She was born on April 8, 1925, and passed away on January 31, 1994, at age 68. They had two children together.
