Sola Sierra Henríquez (born December 1, 1935 – died July 1, 1999) was a brave Chilean human rights activist. She led an important group called Relatives of the Detained-Disappeared. This group worked hard to find out what happened to many people who went missing during the time when Augusto Pinochet was in charge of Chile.
Life of a Human Rights Activist
Sola Sierra was born in San Miguel, a part of Santiago, Chile, on December 1, 1935.
When she was young, Sola joined the Chilean Communist Party. She focused on helping people in need, especially by working to improve health for those who were poor.
Fighting for Justice in Chile
In 1973, Augusto Pinochet took control of Chile. Sola and her husband, Waldo Pizarro, decided to stay in the country. On December 15, 1976, her husband and a friend were arrested by the police and then disappeared. No one knew where they were or what happened to them.
After this, Sola became the leader of a group called Relatives of the Detained-Disappeared. This group worked to find the truth about hundreds of people who went missing during Pinochet's rule. They also wanted those responsible to be held accountable.
Never Giving Up
Even though it was dangerous, Sola and her group kept campaigning until Pinochet lost power. Even after a new government took over, Sola and other families still didn't get answers. A special agreement meant that those responsible for the disappearances were protected from punishment. Because of this, Sola and her group continued their fight for truth and justice.
In October 1998, Pinochet was arrested in London. Sola traveled there to support a Spanish lawyer who was trying to have Pinochet sent to Spain for trial.
Sola Sierra passed away on July 1, 1999. She had a heart attack while getting better from back surgery.
