San Miguel (which means "Saint Michael" in Spanish) is a commune in Chile. It is part of Santiago Province in the Santiago Metropolitan Region. San Miguel was founded a long time ago, on August 10, 1896.
Governing San Miguel
San Miguel is a local area managed by its own government, called a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years. The main office for the alcalde is located at Gran Avenida No. 3418.
The current alcalde of San Miguel is Luis Sanhueza Bravo. He works with a group of people called the communal council to make decisions for the area.
San Miguel also has representatives in the national government of Chile. These representatives help make laws for the whole country. They are part of the National Congress, which includes the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
People of San Miguel
In 2002, a count of the population (called a census) showed that San Miguel has about 78,872 people living there. This area is completely urban, meaning it's a city and has no rural parts. The population actually went down a little bit between 1992 and 2002.
