Growing Up: Daniela Vega's Early Life
Daniela was born in San Miguel, Chile, on June 3, 1989. She was the first child of Igor Alejandro Vega Inostroza and Sandra del Carmen Hernandez de la Cuadra. When she was eight years old, she started learning to sing opera with her grandmother.
As a child, Daniela went to a school for boys. During her teenage years, she realized she was a girl. Her family, including her parents and younger brother Nicolás, gave her a lot of support. This was very important, especially because Chile was quite traditional at the time. Daniela's parents encouraged her to follow her dreams. Her father even suggested she go to beauty school, and later, theater school.

Starting Out: Early Roles and Breakthrough
A writer and director asked Daniela to help create a play about transitioning. She used her own experiences to help with the story. This led to her starring in the play, called La mujer Mariposa (The Butterfly Woman), in 2011. In this play, she also had the chance to sing. It ran for eight years in Santiago.
During this time, Daniela acted in other plays. One important play was Migrante (Migrant), which was about people moving to new countries. In 2014, more people learned about Daniela. She appeared in the music video for the popular song "Maria" by Manuel García.

A Fantastic Woman: A Big Success
The movie A Fantastic Woman (2017) was shown at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. Sebastián Lelio directed the film. Critics praised Daniela's acting in it.
A Fantastic Woman tells the story of Marina, played by Daniela, and Orlando, an older man she loves. They are planning their future together. But then, Orlando gets sick and dies. Marina has to deal with his family and society. She fights to show everyone who she truly is: a fantastic woman.
A film critic named Guy Lodge wrote in Variety that Daniela's acting was amazing. He said her performance was "tough, expressive, and subtly distressed." He also noted that it was a "multi-layered" and "emotionally rich" acting job.
Many people thought Daniela might get an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She won an award for Best Actress in a Foreign Language Film at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. A Fantastic Woman later won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2018, Daniela became the first openly transgender person to present an award at the Academy Awards ceremony.
