Daniela Vega Hernández (born in 1989) is a famous actress and singer from Chile. She is a mezzo-soprano, which means she has a medium-range singing voice. Vega is best known for her role in the movie A Fantastic Woman (2017). The movie was a huge success and won an Academy Award.

In 2018, Vega made history at the 90th Academy Awards. She was the first transgender person to present an award at the ceremony. That same year, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Early Life and School

Daniela Vega was born in 1989 in San Miguel, a part of Santiago, Chile. She was the first child of Igor Alejandro Vega Inostroza and Sandra del Carmen Hernandez de la Cuadra. When she was eight years old, her grandmother began teaching her how to sing opera.

Vega went to an all-boys school when she was growing up. During her teenage years, she realized she was a girl and began to transition. To transition means to start living as the gender you know you are. Her family, including her parents and younger brother Nicolás, were very supportive. This was important because, at the time, it was not common in Chile.

After finishing school, her father encouraged her to study at a beauty school and later a theater school.

Daniela Vega is both an actress and a talented singer.

First Roles and Big Break

Vega's career began on the stage. A writer asked her to help create a play about her own experiences. This led to her starring in the 2011 play La mujer Mariposa (The Butterfly Woman). In the play, she also got to sing. It was so popular that it ran for eight years in Santiago.

She became more widely known in 2014 when she appeared in a music video for the song "Maria" by Manuel García. The video was made to help support young people in the LGBTQ+ community. That same year, she acted in her first movie, The Guest (La visita).

A Fantastic Woman and Stardom

In 2017, Vega starred in the movie A Fantastic Woman. The film was shown at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival and critics loved her performance.

The movie tells the story of Marina (played by Vega), a young woman in love with an older man named Orlando. When Orlando suddenly dies, Marina has to deal with his family and society, who do not accept her. She has to fight to prove who she is: a fantastic woman.

Critics praised Vega's acting. One reviewer said her performance was "tough, expressive, and subtly distressed." Many people thought she deserved a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.

A Fantastic Woman won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This success made Vega an international star. In 2018, she became the first openly transgender person to present an award at the Oscars.

After this success, Vega was cast in a recurring role in the Netflix miniseries Tales of the City.
