Working for the Government
Under President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah, Mr. Berewa held important roles. From 1996 to 1997, he was the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. These roles mean he was the main legal advisor to the government. He also helped make sure laws were fair.
In 1997, the government was briefly taken over. After President Kabbah returned to power, Mr. Berewa continued his work. He served as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice again from 1998 until May 2002. After that, he became the Vice President.
Political Leadership
Becoming Party Leader
In 2005, the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) held a big meeting. This meeting was in Makeni. At this event, Solomon Berewa was chosen to be the leader of the SLPP. He also became their candidate for president in the 2007 election. He received many more votes than other candidates.
The 2007 Election
The presidential election in Sierra Leone happened in 2007. The first round of voting was on August 11. Mr. Berewa came in second place. He received 38.3% of the votes. The person who got the most votes was Ernest Bai Koroma. He was from the All People's Congress (APC) party.
Because no one won more than half the votes, a second round was held. This final vote between Mr. Berewa and Mr. Koroma took place on September 8. On September 17, the results were announced. Mr. Koroma won the election. He received 54.6% of the votes, while Mr. Berewa received 45.4%.
After the Election
After the results were announced, Solomon Berewa accepted his defeat. He was present when Ernest Bai Koroma was sworn in as the new president. This showed a peaceful transfer of power.
The SLPP party has a rule that its leader must step down if the party loses a national election. Because of this rule, Mr. Berewa resigned as the party leader on October 17, 2007.
