Solomon Efimovich Shulman (born January 20, 1936 – died September 6, 2017) was also known as Sol Shulman. He was a talented author, a screenwriter (someone who writes movie stories), and a film director (someone who makes movies). He was also a great adventurer who traveled all over the world!

The Life of Sol Shulman

Sol Shulman first trained as an engineer. But he loved movies! In 1966, he finished film school at the Academy of Cinema in Moscow. This school is called VGIK. There, he learned how to be a film director.

From 1963 to 1973, Sol helped create a popular TV show. It was a documentary series called Film-Adventurer's Almanac. He wrote more than forty documentary films. He also wrote five movie scripts for feature films. His books and articles were published in many countries.

Shulman's Amazing Journeys

Sol Shulman led film trips to many far-off places. He went from the cold North Pole to the high Pamir Mountains. He explored the jungles of Africa and the islands of Oceania. He even visited the deserts of Australia.

He worked at film studios in many countries. These included the USSR, Yugoslavia, Germany, the USA, Italy, and Australia. He was a respected member of many groups. These included the Russian Writers' Union and the Australian Writers' Guild. He was also a professor at an Italian university.

People loved to hear him speak. He gave talks to many students in Italy, England, Germany, Australia, and the USA. He spent his last years living in Melbourne, Australia.

Awards and Achievements

Sol Shulman won several awards for his work. These awards showed how talented he was in filmmaking and writing.

  • 1964: He won the First Prize from the USSR Union of Journalists. This was for his documentary film In Broad Daylight.
  • 1971: He received a prize at an International Film Festival in Czechoslovakia. This was for his documentaries On the Slopes of Elbruce and In Ancient Khiva.
  • 1976: He won First Prize at a film competition in Yugoslavia. This was for his script called The Disaster.
  • 1998: His book Power and Destiny was named "Book of the month." This award came from a group of professional critics.
  • 2006: He received a special "Sign of Appreciation" award.
