The Cornufer guentheri, often called the Solomon Island leaf frog, is a special kind of frog. People also know it as the Solomon Island eyelash frog or Gunther's triangle frog. This frog belongs to the Ceratobatrachidae family.

You can find these frogs all over the Solomon Islands. This includes both the country of Solomon Islands and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. However, they do not live on San Cristobal island. Scientists have seen them living from sea level up to about 830 meters high.

About the Solomon Island Leaf Frog

The Solomon Island leaf frog is very common in its home. It likes to live on the ground in tropical rainforests. You can also find it in forests that are growing back after being cut down. They even live in gardens and other places changed by people.

What Do They Look Like?

These frogs are usually about 8 to 10 centimeters (3 to 4 inches) long. Female frogs are typically bigger than the males. They have special colors and patterns on their backs. This helps them blend in with their surroundings. They often look just like old, decaying leaves on the forest floor. This is why they are called "leaf frogs."

How Do They Grow? (Life Cycle)

The Solomon Island leaf frog has a very interesting way of growing up. Most frogs lay eggs that hatch into tadpoles. But not these frogs! Instead, their eggs hatch directly into tiny froglets. This means there is no tadpole stage at all. The little froglets look like tiny versions of the adult frogs.

The eggs are laid in small hollows. These hollows are usually found at the bottom of trees. When they first hatch, the froglets are very small, about 3 millimeters (1/8 inch) long. They grow very quickly by eating tiny insects.

What Do They Eat?

As they grow, their diet changes. Adult frogs eat many different things. They hunt for insects, spiders, and other small creatures. They also eat smaller amphibians, like other frogs. Sometimes, they even eat small reptiles.

These frogs are "ambush predators." This means they hide and wait for their food. When a small animal comes close, they quickly pounce on it. They are not picky eaters and will even eat other frogs of their own kind if they get the chance.
