Soman Chainani is an American author. He is best known for writing the popular children's book series The School for Good and Evil. Some of his books have also been made into movies.

Early Life and Education

Soman Chainani grew up in Key Biscayne, Florida. His family was one of the few of Indian descent living there.

He went to Harvard University. He earned a degree in English and American Literature in 2001. After Harvard, he studied film at Columbia University. He joined their Master of Fine Arts program.

Writing Career

Soman Chainani is famous for his book series, The School for Good and Evil. The first book became a New York Times Best Seller. Over 4 million copies have been sold. It has been translated into 35 languages.

A major movie based on the series was made by Netflix. It was released in 2022. The film quickly became #1 in over 80 countries.

His book of retold fairytales, Beasts and Beauty, came out on September 21, 2021. Critics praised the book. Kirkus Reviews called it "expertly crafted." They said it brought out "the wonder, terror, and magic of the fantasy realms." Beasts & Beauty also became an instant New York Times Best Seller. This was Soman's seventh book in a row to hit that list.

Beasts & Beauty is planned to become a TV series. Sony 3000 is working on it. Soman is writing and helping to produce the show. His books have spent a total of 50 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list.

His book, Rise of the School for Good and Evil, was released on May 31, 2022. It also became a New York Times Best Seller. Publishers Weekly described it as "an episodic, adventurous fantasy offering." A sequel, Fall of the School for Good and Evil, was released in May 2023.

In 2024, Soman announced his next book, Young World. This book is a global political thriller. It is expected to be released in 2026. It tells the story of a 17-year-old who becomes President of the United States.
