Sonia Tschorne's Life and Work
Early Life and Education
Sonia Tschorne studied architecture at the University of Chile. She finished her degree in 1982. Later, she earned a master's degree from the Catholic University of Chile. This degree focused on urban planning, which is about designing and organizing cities.
Her Political Career
Sonia Tschorne has been a member of the Socialist Party for many years. She worked with the governments of the Concertación de partidos por la democracia (which means "Pact of parties for democracy") starting in 1990. This group of political parties worked together to lead Chile.
She held important roles in the government. She became the National Director of Architecture for the Ministry of Public Works. She also served as the Deputy Secretary of Urban Development. These roles happened during the time when Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle and Ricardo Lagos were presidents.
Important Projects
As an architect, one of her most important projects was the Master Building Plan for Central Santiago. This plan helped guide how buildings and spaces would be developed in the heart of the city.
Between 2004 and 2006, Sonia Tschorne was appointed the Minister of National Assets. She took over this role from Jaime Ravinet. In 2008, she was working as Chile's Undersecretary of Public Works.
In 2024, she was chosen to be a Counselor and President of the Concessions Council for the Ministry of Public Works. This council helps decide how public projects, like roads or airports, are managed by private companies.
