Sonja Lyubomirsky (born December 14, 1966) is a professor of psychology. She was born in Russia and now teaches at the University of California, Riverside in the United States. She is also a well-known author, famous for her book The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want.

Education and Learning

Sonja Lyubomirsky went to Harvard University for her first college degree. After that, she earned her Ph.D. (a very advanced degree) in psychology from Stanford University. Her studies focused on two areas:

  • Social Psychology: This looks at how people's thoughts, feelings, and actions are shaped by others.
  • Personality Psychology: This explores how people are different from each other and what makes each person unique.

Awards and Recognition

Sonja Lyubomirsky has received many important awards for her work. These include:

  • A grant from the John Templeton Foundation.
  • A Science of Generosity grant.
  • The Templeton Positive Psychology Prize.
  • A large grant (one million dollars!) from the National Institute of Mental Health, which she shared with Ken Sheldon.

  • 50 percent of our happiness is set by our genetics. This means it's part of who we are from birth.
  • 10 percent of our happiness is affected by our life situations and what happens to us.
  • 40 percent of our happiness comes from our own choices and actions. This part is something we can control!
