Sopater of Apamea facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sopater of Apamea was a famous philosopher and teacher who lived a long time ago, before the year 337 AD. He was known as a sophist, which means he was a skilled speaker and teacher of wisdom. He was also a Neoplatonist, a type of philosopher who followed the ideas of Plato but with new interpretations.

Sopater's Life and Teachings

Sopater was a student of another important philosopher named Iamblichus. After Iamblichus passed away around 325 AD, Sopater moved to Constantinople. There, he became a good friend of Constantine I, who was the Roman Emperor at the time.

The ancient book called the Suda tells us that Sopater wrote many different books. Two of his works were about "Providence" (which means how events are guided by a higher power) and "People who have Undeserved Good or Bad Fortune."

One of Sopater's most important works is called the Diairesis Zetematon. This book is a collection of 81 different topics that students would debate or give speeches about. It also gave instructions on how to prepare and deliver these speeches. This book is very helpful for modern scholars to understand how teachers and students learned and practiced public speaking in ancient schools.

Sopater's Later Life and Death

Sopater was one of many people who were put to death by Emperor Constantine before 337 AD. Some ancient writers, like Zosimus, believed that another powerful official named Ablabius was behind Sopater's death.

Another writer, Eunapius, said that Sopater was accused of using magic. The story was that Sopater used magical arts to stop ships carrying grain from reaching Constantinople. This would have caused a food shortage in the capital city, which was also Constantine's home. It seems this accusation, possibly started by Ablabius, led to Sopater's execution.
