Sopetrán's Early History
Before the Spanish arrived, the area of Sopetrán was home to native groups. These included the Nutabe and Tahamíes people. The region was known as Los Guamas back then.
On February 22, 1616, Sopetrán was officially founded. A Spanish explorer named Francisco Herrera and Campuzano established the town. He was from a town in Spain called Alcala de Henares. Herrera greatly admired Our Lady of Sopetrán. It is believed he named the new town after her.
Over time, the town had different names. These included Las Guamas and Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption and Sopetrán. The name Las Guamas came from the native Guamas or Guacas people. They lived there centuries ago. These groups were skilled at farming, hunting, fishing, and mining salt. The salt mining was very important to the Spanish. They needed salt for their homes and for their new cattle.
In 1814, Sopetrán officially became a municipality. This means it gained its own local government.
