Sophie Alberti facts for kids
Mathilde Elise Sophie Alberti (born September 19, 1846 – died June 17, 1947) was a very important Danish woman who worked for women's rights. She was a main leader of the Kvindelig Læseforening (Women Readers' Association). Thanks to her, the group grew a lot, reaching about 4,600 members by 1919.
Biography
Sophie Alberti was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 19, 1846. Her father, Carl Christian Alberti, was a high court lawyer and a politician from the Venstre party. Her mother was Albertine Sophie Frederikke Westergaard. Sophie was the oldest of four children.
Sophie stayed at home with her parents until they passed away. When she was only 16, her parents allowed her to travel to Paris, France. She went on a study trip with her friend, Tagea Rovsing.
Sophie and Tagea were both very active in supporting women's right to study. They also paid close attention to the government discussions about housewives getting their own income. After the Women Readers' Association was started by Tagea Rovsing and Sophie Petersen in 1872, Sophie Alberti became an active member two years later.
