Sophronia Smith Hunt facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sophronia Smith Hunt (born Allen; October 1846 – August 1, 1928) was an American woman who bravely disguised herself as a man to serve as a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War. She fought alongside her first husband, who sadly died after being wounded in battle. They both served in the 29th Iowa Infantry Regiment.

Early Life and Family

Sophronia Allen was born in October 1846, likely in Illinois. Her parents were Cyrus and Eunice Allen. She had a basic education. On September 4, 1863, she married James Andrew Jackson Smith.

Secret Service in the Civil War

Many women secretly joined the army during the Civil War, and Sophronia Hunt was one of them. Historians believe about 400 women dressed as men to fight for the Union Army.

In January 1864, Sophronia joined Company C, 29th Iowa Infantry Regiment. She enlisted with her husband. About a month later, her true identity was discovered. However, she was allowed to stay with the regiment. She then served as a battlefield nurse, helping wounded soldiers.

The 29th Iowa Infantry Regiment fought in the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry in April 1864. During this battle, Sophronia's husband was badly wounded. He later died as a prisoner of war. Sophronia left the army after this, having never been wounded herself.

Later Life and Legacy

After the war, Sophronia married John Hunt, another veteran from Iowa. They had eight children together, but only one lived longer than Sophronia.

Sophronia Smith Hunt passed away on August 1, 1928, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was 81 years old.

Many years after her death, in 2016, a special headstone was placed for her. It reads: "Civil War Veteran." This was thanks to the efforts of Shirley Sides, a historian. Sides insisted that the headstone should honor Sophronia as a veteran, not just a nurse. She believed Sophronia deserved recognition for carrying a gun and fighting like other soldiers.
