Sorin Frunzăverde (born April 26, 1960 – died November 3, 2019) was an important Romanian politician. He held several big jobs in the government. He was the Minister of National Defense for Romania two times. This means he was in charge of the country's military and keeping it safe.

He also served as the Minister of Tourism, helping to promote travel and visitors to Romania. Another role he had was in the Ministry of Water, Forestry and Environmental Protection, where he worked on protecting nature.

Sorin Frunzăverde was also the leader of the Caraș-Severin County Council. He was a member of the Parliament of Romania, which is like the country's main law-making body. From 2007 to 2009, he was a Member of the European Parliament. This meant he helped make decisions for the whole of Europe. He started his political journey with the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) and later joined the National Liberal Party (PNL) in 2012.

Early Life and Education

Sorin Frunzăverde was born on April 26, 1960. His hometown was Bocșa, which is in Caraș-Severin County, Romania. He grew up and went to school in a nearby city called Reșița.

He studied at the Politehnica University of Bucharest. He earned a degree in metallurgical engineering. This means he learned how to work with metals and how to make them stronger. After finishing his studies, he became an engineer at the Reșița Ironworks. Later, he led the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Caraș-Severin County.

His Political Journey

Sorin Frunzăverde started his political career in 1992. He was elected to the county council of Caraș-Severin County. By 1996, he became the president of this council.

In December 1997, he was chosen for a national role. He became the Minister of Water, Forestry and Environmental Protection. This was part of the government led by Victor Ciorbea. A few months later, in 1998, a new prime minister, Radu Vasile, took office. Frunzăverde then became the Minister of Tourism.

He served as the Minister of National Defense two times. His first time in this role was from March 13 to December 28, 2000. He was chosen by President Emil Constantinescu. He returned to this important job from October 25, 2006, to April 5, 2007. This time, he served under Prime Minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu.

As a Member of the European Parliament, he represented Romania. He was the head of the Romanian group in the European People’s Party (EPP). He also worked on security and defense matters. He was involved in talks between the European Union and countries in the Western Balkans. He helped his political party join the European People’s Party group.

Personal Details

Sorin Frunzăverde was good at languages. He could speak English, Italian, and German fluently. He was married and had one child. He passed away on November 3, 2019, at the age of 59. He died because of kidney disease.
