Radu Vasile (born October 10, 1942 – died July 3, 2013) was a Romanian politician, a person who studies history, and a poet.
He was a member of the Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party. Radu Vasile served as the Prime Minister of Romania. This important role lasted from April 17, 1998, to December 13, 1999. During his time as Prime Minister, he faced a big event called the last Mineriad. Later, from 2000 to 2004, he became a Senator for the Democratic Party. Besides his work in politics, Radu Vasile also wrote poems. He used the special name Radu Mischiu for his poetry.
Radu Vasile's Early Life and Education
Radu Vasile was born in Sibiu, a city in Romania, in 1942. He grew up following the Roman Catholic faith. In 1967, he finished his studies at the Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest.
Because of some political issues related to his father, he could not go to higher education right after school. In 1971, he started working as a teaching assistant. This was at the Faculty of Economic History at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies (ASE). He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from ASE in 1977. A year later, in 1978, he became a lecturer at the same school.
After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, students helped elect Radu Vasile. He became the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at ASE. He held this position until 1992. After 1990, he continued his studies. He learned about European Integration in cities like Thessaloniki and Munich. In 1994, he became a full Professor at ASE.
Radu Vasile passed away in Bucharest in 2013. He died from colon cancer. He was buried at the Bellu Cemetery in the city.
Radu Vasile's Political Journey
Radu Vasile joined the Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party (PNȚ-CD) in January 1990. He slowly moved up in the party. He became a department head and then a spokesman in 1991.
From 1992, he served as a senator for Bacău. After a party meeting in 1996, he became the Secretary General. Between 1993 and 1994, he was also the director of a newspaper called "Dreptatea".
Since 1993, he was the vice-president of the Senate of Romania. He was also the vice-president of the Senatorial Budget-Finance Commission. This commission handles money matters for the government. In the years 1996–2000, Radu Vasile was part of groups that made friends with other countries. These included Russia and Israel. From 2000–2004, he was in friendship groups with UNESCO and Lebanon.
Radu Vasile suggested two new laws, and one of them became a real law. He also worked on foreign policy, which means how Romania deals with other countries. He helped start the Central European Forum. Important people like Raymond Barre and Helmut Schmidt were also part of this group.
He gave talks about Romanian history at the Sorbonne university. He also presented over 50 scientific papers. These were at academic meetings both in Romania and other countries.
Radu Vasile was a senator for three terms: 1992–1996, 1996–2000, and 2000–2004. The last time, he was elected with the Democratic Party (PD). As Prime Minister, he faced the Mineriad event in February 1999. This situation was solved by what was called the Peace of Cozia.
