The Senate (called Senat in Romanian) is an important part of the government in Romania. It is one of the two main groups that make up the Parliament of Romania. Think of it like a two-part team that makes laws for the country. The Senate is the "upper house" of this team.

What is the Romanian Senate?
The Senate is where elected people, called senators, work together to create and approve laws. Romania has a government system called "bicameral," which means it has two main parts for making laws. The Senate is one of these parts, and the other is the Chamber of Deputies.
How Many Senators Are There?
Currently, the Senate has 136 members, or "seats." Before 2016, there were more senators, but the number was changed. These senators are chosen by people voting in elections.
How Senators Are Chosen
Senators are elected by direct popular vote. This means citizens vote directly for the people they want to represent them. The elections happen every four years.
Senators are chosen using a system called "party-list proportional representation." This means people vote for a political party, and the number of seats a party gets depends on how many votes it receives.
Romania is divided into 43 special areas called "electoral districts." These include 41 counties, the city of Bucharest, and one special district for Romanians who live in other countries. Each district elects its own senators.
Where the Senate Meets
The Senate meets in a very famous building in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. This building is called the Palace of the Parliament. It's one of the largest buildings in the world!
