About the Movie "Soul Soldier"
Soul Soldier is an American Western film. It was made in 1970. The movie is known for featuring a cast of many Black actors. It explores themes related to the experiences of Black people in the Old West.
How "Soul Soldier" Was Made
The film started out with the name Men of the Tenth. It was first filmed using 16mm film. This is a smaller film size. After it was first released as The Red, White, and Black, the producer, Stuart Hirschman, wanted to make it better. He asked John Cardos to help.
John Cardos looked at the film. He decided that the whole movie needed to be filmed again. This time, they used 35mm film, which is a larger, higher-quality film size. Cardos directed this new filming. They used a special camera called an Arriflex 35 IIC.
Meet the Cast of "Soul Soldier"
The movie features several interesting actors. Isabel Sanford plays a character named Isabel Taylor. You might know her from other TV shows or movies.
Another important actor was Rafer Johnson. He was a famous decathlete. A decathlete is an athlete who competes in ten different track and field events. Rafer Johnson had even won medals at the Olympic Games. He planned to use the money he earned from acting in Soul Soldier to start his own film company.
Richard Dix's son, Robert Dix, also appears in the movie. He plays a Native American warrior.
Why This Film Was Important
Soul Soldier became a successful movie. Its success helped lead to other films being made that featured Black actors and stories. This showed that there was an audience for these types of movies. When the film was released for home viewing, it was given the new name Buffalo Soldier. This name connects to the famous Black cavalry soldiers who served in the U.S. Army after the Civil War.
